Justice Survey 2003
Gathering Public Opinion on the Administration of Justice in
India
There is a slow but growing awareness in India, to its systems for
the administration of justice. Over the last decade, the country
has initiated far-reaching judicial reforms, to re-look at various
laws, clear the backlog of cases pending in the various courts of
law, speed up the processing of cases and, to widen the access to
justice for citizens, with a general view of increasing the efficiency
and the legitimacy of administration of justice.
In view of these developments, it is necessary to have a reliable
instrument to measure the opinions and attitudes of the population
vis-à-vis the administration of justice. This feedback from
the general public is important & imperative.
To meet this objective, the Law & Justice Foundation of India
has commissioned a project called The India Justice Survey 2003.
The survey consists of interviews and feedback from a cross-section
of the Indian society - a representative sample of over 100,000
households in 10 major cities. All respondents are asked to give
their opinion on various aspects of the justice system in general,
and some of its civil and criminal components.
